The long-awaited bypass - a project of Shellharbour Council - would see traffic along the Illawarra Highway and Albion Park shopping area substantially reduced.
"We have allocated $4.2 million in funding to Shellharbour City Council for upgrades to Tripoli Way as an alternate route to the Albion Park town centre, so traffic from the growing Calderwood area won't clog up the Illawarra Highway," Kiama MP Gareth Ward said.
"Pending Council's acceptance of the agreement, the funding will be used to prepare detailed designs, acquire land and gain environmental approvals."
In further funding Transport for NSW will get $1 million to continue a traffic study into upgrades on the M1 Princes Motorway between Figtree and Dapto, which could lead to new on-ramps, off-ramps or additional lanes.
Mr Ward said the work could allow for easier travel to and from the growing West Dapto area.
A further $400,000 in funding will go to Wollongong City Council to help plan upgrades on Northcliffe Drive, Wylie Road and West Dapto Road, pending formal agreement.
"This funding will allow Wollongong City Council to prepare concept designs and a business case for upgrades that will provide a fast and efficient link between West Dapto and major roads," Mr Ward said.
