The creative project supported by Wollongong City Council's Cultural Development Team will develop a mural for the external wall of Coledale Community Hall.
SCWC events and communications manager Adara Enthaler said the themes and writing from these workshops will go on to inform the design of the mural by artist Bradley Eastman (AKA Beastman).
The community can join writer and Illawarra-resident Judi Morison in drawing inspiration from the local history of Coledale and its individuals, looking at what history is and why we write it.
She said with poet Mark Tredinnick, participants will learn the practices of poetry and of place and landscape.
"We feel very inspired by the rich history of Coledale and the many artists who reside in the community," Ms Enthaler said.
"This project is our opportunity to cement our new home in Coledale by bringing a fun element for locals, tourists and SCWC members, to create something that is meaningful through expressions of creative arts.
"As someone who grew up in the area, I'm also very excited to see more public art in the smaller suburbs of the Illawarra."
Registrations to the workshops are required and can be made by visiting www.southcoastwriters.org.
