Officers were called to a medical centre on the Princes Highway to reports a man had suffered a stab wound to the arm.
They were told the man, believed to be aged in his 40s, had been injured during a fight with a group of up to 10 men not far from the Dapto club.
The man was taken to Wollongong Hospital in a stable condition for treatment, with injuries not considered to be life threatening.
A crime scene was established as officers from Lake Illawarra Police District commence an investigation.
Pharmacist Raphael told the Mercury he was not working at Dapto Centre Town Pharmacy located in Dapto Medical and Family Practice on Wednesday night but his colleague told him the injured man came into the chemist seeking first aid treatment.
"The pharmacist sent him to the doctors at the medical centre down the road as we can't do that type of treatment if anything criminal happened," he said.
Raphael said the man just walked in, not distressed, with a small wound to his arm.
The floor was cleaned after the man left as he had dripped blood onto the ground.
There was a trail of blood leading up to the pharmacy on Thursday morning.
Raphael said the man's injury "was not the worst" the pharmacists had seen.
Police officers also asked the pharmacists for information about the incident on Wednesday night.
