Chair of the Conservatorium Board Rex Leighton said in a statement they were "naturally disappointed" but were respectful of his personal circumstances.
"Justin has been a calm and steady hand in a turbulent time," Mr Leighton said.
"We appreciate the professionalism and energy which Justin brought to the Con and recognise the impact he has made during his short time at the helm".
The Board of the Wollongong Conservatorium of Music acted quickly upon receipt of Mr Ankus' resignation and has announced the appointment of David Francis as the new Chief Executive Officer of the Con.
Mr Francis will assume responsibilities in May this year.
His experience encompasses being the Executive Director of the Four Winds Inc Australia; General Manager of the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs Ltd Australia; Director of Arts, Dartington Hall Trust, Devon in the UK; Senior Producer Contemporary Music Network Arts Council England; and several other leadership positions in Music and Arts Management in the UK.
Mr Francis is also a Board Director of the Australian Music Centre.
"He is committed to ensuring the continuation of the Con's important community role in the delivery of music and music education for so many," Mr Leighton said.
"He looks forward to meeting with students, families, and supporters of the Con, as well as with regional stakeholders and the locals of the Keiraville neighbourhood as he settles into his new role."
In welcoming Mr Francis to The Con, Board Chair Rex Leighton also thanked Justin for his time, sadly shortened due to personal circumstances, and praised his efforts along with those of all staff members.
