The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a hazardous surf warning for the Illawarra and other NSW coastal regions on Monday, and it will likely be renewed for Tuesday.
"The hazardous surf today is due to an easterly swell," meteorologist Dr Helen Reid said.
"It's being generated by the low over the Tasman."
Dr Reid said the same weather system would continue to affect surf and swell conditions on Tuesday, but hazardous conditions would abate by Wednesday.
Tuesday was shaping up to be another mostly sunny day, she said, but shower activity was likely to return on Wednesday, and Thursday looked to be "quite wet".
People are advised to consider staying out of the water and avoid walking near areas exposed to the surf when the warning is current.

Rock fishers are told to avoid rock platforms that are exposed to the ocean, and instead fish in a safe location that is sheltered from the surf.
Boaters looking to cross shallow water and ocean bars are advised to look at changing their route or delaying their voyage.
Those on the water should wear a lifejacket and carry the appropriate safety equipment.
They should also log on with their local Marine Rescue radio base, and consider their safety management plan.
