His first idea was to take part in the Australia Day Aquathon, however, that was postponed in 2021 due to Covid. Instead, McKeon will be special guest at another Rob Battocchio-organised event - the Splash Wollongong this Saturday.
Held at Wollongong Harbour, it will feature a variety of swimming, aquathon and running events, and is expected to attract around 1000 participants. There will be Covid-safe restrictions in place at Splash Wollongong.
The event has the support of McKeon, who hasn't been able to attend an Australia Day Aquathon due to swimming commitments.
"I'm looking forward to getting down there on March 6, it will be good fun," McKeon said.
"Events like these run all the time around the Sydney and Wollongong areas. I've actually done a few of them since retiring from swimming. It's great to see people getting behind water safety and being active, and feeling comfortable in the ocean."
