Ball took 22 minutes to score in the 2-nil win over Newcastle and another win in Sunday's double-header clash against Perth could keep them in the finals race.

On Tuesday, Ball and Wolves attacker Lachlan Scott were comparing notes about bouncing back from adversity, after Wollongong were thumped 4-nil by Rockdale.

Before the Phoenix meet the Glory at WIN Stadium, the Wolves take on Manly United on Sunday afternoon, fixtures which could also be a timely reminder of Wollongong's A-League or national second division credentials.

Ball was suspended for two games after being sent off for a dangerous challenge on Central Coast's Matt Simon, but responded on his return against the Jets.

"With the injuries and timing of (the suspension), it didn't help," Ball said.

"It was a frustrating time ... I take full responsibility for it.

"I think I needed to make a difference after missing the two games, it was nice to hit the back of the net and contribute to the three points."

Ball said the victory over Newcastle showed Phoneix has rediscovered "the strongest point of our DNA, that (defensive) shape and being hard to beat".

Wellington are still stuck second last on the ladder, but are just four points behind sixth-placed Perth, making it a crucial battle.

With the double-header part of 'Wollongong appreciation month' - after the Phoenix relocated to the city to be part of the A-League season due to New Zealand Covid restrictions - the Wolves are already reaching for the reset button on their NPL campaign.
