Sydney-based Degnan Construction will design and build the facilities, which will also include a new footbridge, new toilets and kiss and ride spaces.
"Detailed design work has commenced and early works are due to start in the upcoming months," the spokeswoman said.
"Major construction begins around the middle of this year with completion expected in 2022."
The spokeswoman said Degnan planned to engage Illawarra subcontractors as part of the construction.
"The contract for the detailed design and construction for the Unanderra station upgrade is expected to be awarded in the coming weeks," she said.
"Once the design has been finalised, construction is expected to commence in mid-2021 and anticipated to be completed in 2022."
