The Flagstaff Group is searching for female mentors willing to volunteer their time to support a new program tailored to women with disabilities. The Powering Up program is aimed at helping Flagstaff employees develop life and employment skills. Flagstaff support coordinator and counselor Gemma Sheehy is among those who have been helping women in the workforce and knows the input of others in the community with a broad range of experience will greatly help the effectiveness of such mentoring. "I think it's really important because everyone comes with different skill sets," she said. "It's also helpful with the whole notion of inclusion. It means building connections with people in the community who do and don't have disabilities. "It will be helpful for women to reach outside the disability world to receive help. I think it will be a really nice encouragement and confidence building exercise for them." Ms Sheehy said it was very rewarding to be a mentor and perfect for women who want to help out but don't know where to start. "It is super rewarding. Most people want to help out in the community and this gives them an opportunity to do what they are already doing and help others in the process. "It is not hard at all and people will be surprised at how much of an impact they can have and how grateful the mentees are. "They love being able to speak about what is going on in their life and build some skills in particular areas. "I dare say anyone who does it will want to do it again because they will see the outcomes that come from helping these people." Funded by the NSW Government's Investing in Women program, activities will include face-to-face workshops covering self-esteem, inner health, employment skills and financial success through practical skills and mentoring as well as online workshops for women unable to attend events in person. The call for female volunteers coincides with International Women's Day on Monday. Read more: We depend on subscription revenue to support our journalism. If you are able, please subscribe here.
