Children have been leading from the front this week and Shellharbour City Council is encouraging all residents to roll up their sleeves and help the environment this Sunday on Clean Up Australia Day.

Shellharbour mayor Marianne Saliba said every year Clean Up Australia Day inspires and empowers communities to clean up and conserve their local area and this weekend's event was a great opportunity to help stop single-use items from infiltrating the city's ecosystems.
Cr Saliba said during COVID-19 there had been a heightened use of single-use disposable items such as plastic cutlery, takeaway coffee cups, food packaging and face masks. And by working together the community can help protect Shellharbour's beautiful and diverse natural environments.
She said many children were getting involved this year including senior students from Lake Illawarra South Public School who cleaned up along the Lake Illawarra foreshore on Friday.
