The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the Illawarra, Sydney, Hunter and Mid-North Coast districts on Monday afternoon.
While ominous clouds were photographed near Kiama and Gerringong, the predicted storm passed over the region.
The Shoalhaven received 10mm of rain on Monday afternoon, and Penrith copped 78km per hour winds, which downed trees and ripped guttering off houses.
The SES was on standby across the state to assist if needed. The bureau cancelled the storm warning at 7.13pm. Wet weather is predicted to continue.
"This is just the start of a wet old week for #NSW!" the Bureau of Meteorology said on Twitter.
"A deepening surface trough over eastern Australia will combine with moist and humid air to bring showers and thunderstorms to large parts of the state. Severe thunderstorms are possible."
