This week motorists driving past 45-49 Princes Hwy noticed workers on site and a sign saying 'Opening Soon'.
A McDonald's Australia spokesperson said the latest $5 million investment will create jobs as well as training and development opportunities.
"McDonald's Unanderra has started construction and is expected to open in the second half of the year," the spokesperson said.
"Every McDonald's restaurant is committed to supporting the community within the area it operates.
"The restaurant will inject over $5 million into the local economy and create 100 jobs during construction.
"Once operational, the restaurant will create a further 100 to 120 jobs for the local community.
"We are currently recruiting for the new restaurant, with 100 positions available."
The spokesperson said the new 24 hour Unanderra McDonald's will include a McCafe, PlayPlace, dual lane drive-thru and delivery room.
The Unanderra McDonald's proposal divided community opinion a year ago when there were as many people excited about a development application being lodged with Wollongong City Council as there were those asking why there needed to be another Macca's so close to other existing stores in the area.
McDonald's Figtree is located three kilometres from the site of the new Unanderra store and McDonald's Dapto is a mere 10-minute drive south along the Princes Hwy.
McDonald's Australia also has plans for a 24-hour outlet at Wongawilli.
That development application drew many objections from the community in the historic West Dapto village before being knocked back by Wollongong City Council.
But McDonald's Australia has still not given up hope.
"We remain committed to working with Council regarding the proposed Wongawilli site," the spokesperson said.
