The sunshine, sea conditions and even the fish, all aligned to be the best few days we have seen in a long time.

Fishing offshore was, however, a bit of a hit-and-miss affair with some boats doing really well and others getting the dreaded doughnut.

There were marlin, wahoo, dollies and yellowfin tuna about in good numbers but getting them to bite was a different story.

While many boats scored fish, some reported they were seeing plenty of fish busting up but they just couldn't entice a bite no matter what was thrown at them.

Yellowfin were busting up everywhere, and launching out of the water on bait schools, but rarely would touch a lure or a livey.

This anomoly proved very frustrating for many anglers with some tuna estimated around the 50-kilogram mark.

With the good run of weather hopefully set to continue into this weekend, there should be smiles and fish aplenty.

The snapper were again either there or missing in action, with many reports saying the old bait-and-burley method worked far better than the plastics or jigs last week.

That has not been the go-to attraction for quite some time.

Some of the reds were taken on fresh squid baits or fresh slimey fillets with fish to 4kg.

Another problem was the amount of bait about; with massive schools of salmon, tailor, frigate mackerel, bonito and many more at times making it very hard to get a bait through to the hungry fish loitering underneath.

There were again plenty of good kings about over the weekend that were found in more recognised haunts and some of these bruisers were arm-stretching thumpers over and above 10kg.

These larger kings were in very welcome schools too, but frustratingly they were on the move and hard to keep up with.

Patience proved successful as the kings eventually returned unannounced until the rods bent hard.
