Now completed the library is ready for use again after the holidays with new books, games, shelving, carpet, walls and seating.
There is also an improved meeting space within the library for the Parents and Citizens Association.
Mount Kembla Public School teacher and librarian Ainsley Laross said students started enjoying their improved learning environment just prior to the break.
"This is fantastic for the students, it's a great improvement," she said.
South32 IMC vice president operations Wayne Bull said South32 was committed to making a positive contribution to communities where it operates.
"Quality education changes lives and South32 is proud to support Mount Kembla Public School students with their ongoing development, especially their love of reading," he said.
Funding for the library refurbishment came from South32's Dendrobium Community Enhancement Program (DCEP).
The DCEP was established in 2004 to support community projects and initiatives in the local area surrounding Dendrobium Mine.
South32 IMC distributes three cents to the DCEP from every tonne of saleable coal it produces and since 2004 more than AU$2 million has been put into to the fund and allocated to community projects.
During the first half of FY2021, five organisations across the Illawarra shared in AU$234,244 from the DCEP.
Other recent community projects supported by the DCEP include support for the Life Education Program in local schools; improvements to Ryan Park playground, Mount Kembla; Mount Kembla Public School COVID-19 pandemic resources; Mount Kembla Rural Fire Brigade; Kembla Heights Fishing Club; and for future Figtree Community Carols events, organised by Figtree Anglican Church.
