Shellharbour City Council held its first 'BioBlitz' at the weekend in the Blackbutt Forest with the NSW Government's Saving our Species program, the Australian Museum's FrogID project, and Team Quoll from the University of Wollongong.
Data from the event will inform the conservation of the area's ecosystems.
"Surrounded by suburbia, the reserve is an important refuge for birds, frogs, reptiles, swamp wallabies, and arboreal mammals like sugar gliders and brushtail possums," mayor Marianne Saliba said.
"It is also home to many threatened plant and animal species facing extinction."
While the BioBlitz is over, residents can still record their observations of flora and fauna in the region using the FrogID and iNaturalist apps.
