A report to go before Wollongong councillors at next week's meeting recommends they accept a tender to undertake the works at a cost of $289,692, excluding GST.
An asset inspection of the community centre identified the building's kitchen needed upgrading to comply with current food premises standards and meet the needs of the community.
Council staff report the kitchen is small and poorly configured.
The works will include the installation of a new kitchen, air-conditioning, energy-efficient lighting, fans, floor coverings, storage cupboards, and tiles; an upgrade of the power supply; and the removal of hazardous materials, among other upgrades.
Council staff say it is expected this work will keep the centre in a serviceable condition for another 20 years.
The building was constructed in the 1950s and refurbished in the 1980s.
