A recruitment drive has begun for field officers and engagement officers, who will help collect statistics from local residents for the upcoming Census.
"People need a drivers license and access to a car, they need to have a mobile [phone] and basically we're looking for people who are well organised, good communicators and are comfortable getting out and talking to people," spokesman Andrew Henderson told the Mercury.
"It is useful [if you can speak a second language] particularly in areas, like Wollongong and the Illawarra, where you do have quite a diverse population."
Field officers are people who go around to households and distribute instructions and forms for Census day (officially August 10), as well as check up on households that may not have responded yet.
Mr Henderson said people would be contracted in a part-time capacity from July to September, could work around other committments (such as dropping the kids at school or another part-time job), though officers would need to be able to work during the day, evenings and weekends.
During the last Census 63 per cent of Australian's completed the survey online, with around 75 per cent expected to use the web in 2021.
Mr Henderson said demographics of people who prefered using pen and paper for the survey varied greatly between cities and regoins.
"In the ACT the older people there tend to do it online, whereas if you get out into more regional australia it tends to be people who are not so confident or trusting of the internet, some new arrivals and migrant groups we tend to get to them with paper," he said. "It's horses for courses really."
