Mathew Hodder, 45, fronted Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday where he pleaded guilty to high-range drink driving.
Agreed facts tendered to court said police went to Walker Street in Helensburgh following reports a drunk driver was attempting to flee the scene after he crashed his car into a tree on January 31 at about 11pm.
Police found the white Isuzu ute's airbags had been deployed. They saw Hodder stumbling around outside the driver's side of the car, clutching his chest.
"It's all my fault. No one else to blame but myself, I've f**ked up," Hodder said to police.
He then collapsed to the ground and fell asleep briefly.
Police noted Hodder was "well inebriated" and was suffering chest injuries due to whiplash caused by the seatbelt.
Hodder woke up in a highly agitated and disorientated state and refused to follow police instructions.
Hodder punched the driver's side door in frustration and continued to swear and mumble words.
A Helensburgh ambulance crew arrived on the scene to assess Hodder, who continued to be uncooperative when he was requested to lay down on the stretcher.
He repeatedly kept wanting to get his phone from the car against the directions of police and paramedics.
Hodder was taken to Wollongong Hospital to be treated for his injuries.
A sample of blood was taken and analysed with results determining he had a blood alcohol reading of 0.236.
On March 6, Hodder provided police officers with a version of events from that night, however his memory of the crash was vague.
He told police he had drunk a number of alcohol mixed drinks but could not recall how many.
Hodder was issued with a future court attendance notice.
The case was adjourned to June 15 for sentence.
