The house, located at 64 Beach Drive, Woonona, sold for $4.2 million after 19 days on the market.
Selling agent, Adam McMahon at Dignam Real Estate said there was interest from prospective buyers in Sydney, throughout Australia and London.
He said it was bought by an Illawarra resident who intended for it to be their place of residence, and planned to undertake an internal renovation.
Listed for sale via Expressions of Interest, it had a price guide of $3.9 million to $4.2 million.
Sitting on 784sqm, the home features four bedrooms plus an office, and three bathrooms.
The seller was long-time former University of Wollongong Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gerard Sutton.
Prof Sutton and wife Sylvia had owned the property for more than 20 years.
The original beach house had been renovated prior to them buying it, and Mrs Sutton later renovated it again.
"We had a university residence, and it was becoming too expensive to maintain," Prof Sutton said.
"So the council of the university told me to go find a house of our own."

Prof Sutton told the Mercury the property's best features were being "right on the beach, and right on the park".
"Our big family just use it as a resort... It has everything if you want to be near a beach," he said.
"We have enjoyed 20 years there, and now it's someone else's turn."
After living in the Illawarra for 30 years, Prof Sutton said they would be sad to leave the region.
He said they were downsizing, and wanted to be close to family in Sydney.
This follows a beachfront property in Wombarra being snapped up by a Sydney buyer for a jaw-dropping suburb record price of $6.31 million last week.
Sitting on a 902sqm block zoned R2 low density residential, the five-bedroom, three-bathroom property is located at 553A Lawrence Hargrave Drive, Wombarra.
According to Pricefinder, the home previously sold in 2010 for $3 million.
