"A 30-year-old Illawarra man was arrested and charged on May 6 with possessing or controlling child abuse material outside of Australia," the spokesperson said.
He is scheduled to appear before Wollongong Local Court on June 22. The spokesperson said further information about the man and the nature of the charges will be provided at the date of court appearance.
It is understood a number of schools, including Mount Warrigal Public School, Warilla North Public School, and Shellharbour Anglican College, sent letters to parents informing them a casual teacher was charged with possessing or controlling child abuse material. The letters indicated that no students were involved in the offences.
The Department of Education was approached about the claims, and confirmed a person had been charged by police.
"The safety and wellbeing of students is our number one priority," a Department of Education spokesperson said.
