Health workers who have been the frontline of the COVID pandemic in the Illawarra will be the focus of the National Basketball League clash between the Hawks and the Adelaide 36ers.
As the game night sponsor for the clash, the Mercury has worked with the Hawks to dedicate a section of the grandstand at the game to COVID health workers, as well as the commemorative front page expressing the community's appreciation.
"For us it's about giving these health workers a massive 'thank you'," Hawks president Dorry Kordahi said.
"It's a testament to what they've done for this community and over the last couple of years. We are excited to host them, welcome them into the Hawks stable and show them they are a valued part of the community. Ones that we can't live without."
As part of the evening there will be a special video tribute at half-time.
Having to navigate through a COVID-ravaged season, Mr Kordahi said he had great admiration for those working on the pandemic's frontline.
"What we've gone through as a club, after restarting in the middle of a pandemic, has been one of the hardest things," he said.
"The pressure we've experienced is not something you'd want to live through, but these workers are in the frontline day in and day out and have been doing it for so long. It's a testament to their character.
"We can't take it for granted. They do amazing work in a high pressure environment ... hopefully we can get the win for them."
The Illawarra Mercury is a proud partner of the Illawarra Hawks and has been since the only remaining foundation club helped launch the National Basketball League in 1979. The Mercury would also like to thank NSW Health for helping make tonight's tribute possible.
