Meshack Nindagiye was on platform one at Wollongong Railway Station with his partner on the evening of March 6 when Joshua James Hayward began yelling racial taunts from the opposite platform.
"You're a white bitch, you're a black dog, you're a black dog," Hayward said, according to a set of agreed police facts tendered to Wollongong Local Court this week.
Police said CCTV footage showed both parties leaving their respective platforms and making their way to the concourse footbridge.
Hayward, who had his dog with him, was seen to remove the lead from his animal's collar and use it to strike the steel railings along the bridge in an act of intimidation.
He then began swinging the lead in circles in front of him, telling Nindagiye "come here you black dog, come here dog. I'm going to kill you with this dog lead."
It is alleged Nindagiye then took a hunting style knife from the waistband of his pants and brandished in Hayward's direction.
The racial abuse continued for a short time before both parties dispersed, with Hayward heading towards the Crown Street Mall and Nindagiye and his girlfriend returning to the train platform. The duo boarded a train a short time later and left Wollongong.
Nindagiye was arrested later that evening and charged with affray and wielding a knife in public.
His case remains before the court.
Meanwhile, Hayward was arrested 10 days later and charged with affray and carrying an offensive implement in a public place.
He pleaded guilty to both charges during a brief mention of the matter in court this week
The case was adjourned to June 22 for a sentencing report to be prepared.
