Well, it has to do with work Optus is carrying out on mobile phone towers in the Illawarra.
"These works are being completed to provide increased capacity and improve network coverage in the area," an Optus spokesman said.
"The planned works are expected to take place across a period of approximately two weeks. While we have overlapping network coverage, some customers' service may be impacted.
"Optus apologises to customers who may be impacted as a result of these planned works and thanks them for their patience."
Even if someone doesn't have an Optus mobile phone contract, they could still have been affected.
What is it with such a widespread mobile phone outage?
There are only three mobile network owners - Telstra, Optus and Vodafone and all other companies use one of them.
Providers like Southern Phone, Dodo, Coles Mobile and iPrimus all use the Optus network.
However, some residents at Unanderra have had their internet service affected for a very different reason.
"Some Optus customers around Unanderra and surrounds may have experienced disruptions to their services due to an incident caused by an electrical fault which has now been fixed," the spokesman said.
