Together they will raise a hand.
That hand will signify a call for all to challenge the world we are living in.
It will ask us all to help clear the path for a better, more equal world.
It will be a signal for us to celebrate women's achievement.
To raise awareness against bias.
To take action for equality.
These are the calls to action for International Women's Day 2021.
What we all know and understand is a more equal world is a better world and it is the responsibility of us all to help work towards that goal.
And contrary to the naysayers, the rise of women, does not mean the fall of men.
There are many men who are passionate advocates and champions for change. Helping to build diverse and inclusive organizations that challenge stereotypes and bias. It is up to each of us to make this a fairer world.
If you asked someone when the fight for women's right to vote and for equal pay for equal work occurred most would turn around and answer with the late 1800s or early 1900s.
Yet it is a reality one hundred years later were are still fighting for better representation of women in our political systems and the "gender pay gap" still remains a chasm more than a gap.
As far as we've come, we still have a long way to go.
On Friday this community does its part by pledging to #ChooseToChallenge.
The 2021 IWD Illawarra luncheon is coming some months later than usual, but the delay has meant the popular event will be able to allow significant numbers despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
As a proud partner of IWD, the Illawarra Mercury print edition on Friday features a special wrap paying tribute to the significance of the theme, the event and the work of IWD Illawarra.
The sheer fact this event is supported and loved like it is speaks volumes of community and the people within it. You can be very proud, people of the Illawarra.
