Transport for NSW officials and Wollongong City council representatives have this week discussed options for reducing the regular congestion on Lawrence Hargrave Drive in Thirroul and the Princes Highway at Bulli.
The result draws on consultation done in 2019 in which frustration at times when a driver is stopped to turn right, forcing other cars to manouevre around them, featured prominently.
In Bulli, the measures would include:
- Banning the right turn northbound into Station St
- Modifying the roundabout at the end of Memorial Dr
- A dedicated right turn light at Park St
- Extending clearways in the town centre both during the week and into the weekend, and
- Dedicated right turn lanes into the showground and from Point St
In Thirroul there are two options being considered, with the preferred option including a dedicated third lane southbound on Lawrence Hargrave Drive.
Under the "preferred option" for Thirroul significant parking would be lost on Lawrence Hargrave Dr:
- Near the IGA supermarket southbound
- On both sides near the service station south of Arthur St
- From the Thirroul Gallery to South Sailor restaurant
- Near the bakery and bike shop southbound before Philip St
It is not clear how this "third lane" would alleviate congestion when traffic reaches the single-lane train bridge, or at the traffic lights at Philip St and at Wrexham Rd.
The other option includes clearways through the whole of Thirroul, southbound every weekday morning, and northbound every weekday afternoon.
Member for Heathcote Lee Evans has said the consultation period will start on Monday, June 7.
