Kiera MP Ryan Park met with representatives from the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) to discuss their plan to flatten the popular jumps that took the mountain bike community years to build.
"This morning I had an urgent meeting with National Parks about this issue," Mr Park posted on his Facebook page about 11am.
"National Parks have agreed NOT to remove the jumps on Monday.
"I have asked NPWS to meet with some representatives from those mountain bike riders who use 'Possums' at the actual site so we can do a walk through and see how we can better manage this situation with some commonsense."
NPWS' decision to remove the beloved jumps from the Possums track was confirmed by the Mercury on Wednesday.
"Works will be confined to the heavily disturbed area where the jumps are located," an NPWS spokesperson said.
"The jumps are illegal and cause environmental impacts and safety issues in the Illawarra Escarpment State Conservation Area, and also affect surrounding private property."
The news sparked an immediate angry reaction from the community, not least of which came from Mr Park.
"What absolute rubbish! I'll be raising this with the Minister tomorrow," Mr Park said, retweeting the Mercury story on Wednesday night.
He followed through with his statement and got on the front foot first thing on Thursday.
Mountain bike riders had also planned protests for the area on Monday morning when works to remove the jumps were flagged to start.
The Wollongong City Council, which is working with National Parks, has felt the full force of the anger, particularly in light of the fact the city has been awarded UCI Bike City status.
Anyone who would like to be included in the small group meeting with NPWS representives is invited to email Mr Park at keira@parliament.nsw.gov.au.
