The interchange at the southern end of the Albion Park Rail bypass recently had five sets of traffic lights installed.
In addition to causing confusion for some road users, who have unintentionally travelled around it the wrong way, the interchange has done little to alleviate traffic pressure in the area, with some residents saying it's the worst they've seen in decades.
Others took to social media to complain about people being held up for 40 minutes or more.
A spokesperson for Transport for NSW acknowledged the problem, and said technicians would adjust the timing of the traffic lights.
"Unfortunately there is still queuing on the approaches to the Oak Flat roundabout during peak periods," the spokesperson said.
"This is similar to the queuing that happened before the lights were installed.
"Transport for NSW is working to address the situation by modifying the sequence of light changes to deliver a smoother flow of traffic in the area.
"Technicians are monitoring the site and will adjust the timing of light changes when needed to let traffic flow as smoothly as possible."
Shortly before the interchange opened, in late May, a Transport for NSW spokesman said the lights at each of the five legs of the interchange would result in improvements in traffic flow and safety.
He also said gridlock caused by people having to queue up for repeated red lights was unlikely.
"The interchange has been designed to allow the majority of traffic to get where they want to go in one green light, generally only stopping for one set of signals," the spokesman said.
It will be months before the Albion Park Rail bypass opens, and hopefully offers a more permanent solution for motorists.
"The situation is expected to improve when the Albion Park Rail bypass opens in stages over the coming months," a Transport for NSW spokesperson said.
"When the new bypass opens fully, some of the traffic travelling from the north will enter the Oak Flats Interchange from the new motorway. This will help balance the load on the interchange and help traffic flow in peak periods."
This weekend Transport for NSW will open a section of the bypass for locals to walk on before it opens. The event will include food and entertainment.
