Emergency services were called to Birch Crescent about 6.15am to reports a man had been injured during an altercation with another man, known to him.
Police and paramedics arrived at the house to find a 51-year-old man suffering multiple stab wounds to his back.
He was treated by a critical care doctor and paramedics, before being taken to Wollongong Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
A 41-year-old man was arrested and taken to Wollongong Police Station, where he was charged with wound person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
He was refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday.
Neighbours told the Mercury they were left shaken by the early morning attack.
"I woke up to him yelling 'help, help' at 6am, before my husband and a neighbour ran out to help him," a woman said.
"He ran out into the road and almost got hit by a car driving past.
"He was sitting in the gutter and talking, but you could hear him gasping. He's a decent guy."
Paramedics have issued a public appeal following the incident.
"We urge the public to understand the consequences of their actions before using a knife as a weapon," NSW Ambulance Inspector Troy Pan said.
"The damage can often be irreversible."
