An Illawarra teacher charged with possessing or controlling child abuse material outside of Australia has appeared in court for the first time.
Geoffrey Chesher, 30, faced Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday.
The Lake Illawarra man taught casually at schools such as Shellharbour Anglican College and Mount Warrigal Public School.
Chesher has been charged with possess or control child abuse material outside of Australia and possess or control child abuse material using carriage service.
Chesher has yet to enter pleas to the charges.
He will remain on bail until he next appears in court, with the matter adjourned until August 26.
In May, a spokesperson from the Australian Federal Police confirmed an Illawarra man had been charged with possessing or controlling child abuse material outside of Australia.
"A 30-year-old Illawarra man was arrested and charged on May 6 with possessing or controlling child abuse material outside of Australia," the spokesperson said.
The Mercury reported in May that it was understood a number of schools, including Mount Warrigal Public School, Warilla North Public School, and Shellharbour Anglican College, sent letters to parents informing them a casual teacher was charged with possessing or controlling child abuse material.
The letters indicated that no students were involved in the alleged offences.
