The NSW Government has leaked details of the announcement to be made at 11 am today to a several metropolitan newspapers indicating that the stay at home orders for five million people will be extended beyond Friday's midnight deadline.
The announcement is also expected to include implications for schools in Greater Sydney area, with schooling moving to online learning for at least four days next week. It is believed parents who are essential workers will be able to take their children to school.
Reports are suggesting the lockdown will continue to include Wollongong and Shellharbour along with Sydney, the Blue Mountains and the Central Coast.
This is despite representations from Illawarra MPs to the Health Minister Brad Hazzard to have the Illawarra exempted from any lockdown extension. Kiama is not included in the stay-at-home orders.
The lockdown was introduced to combat the outbreak of the highly contagious Delta strain of the virus which has now seen more than 330 locally acquired cases of COVID-19 recorded since mid-June.
During a press conference on Tuesday Ms Berejiklian said the length of the lockdown would be informed by the fact that the NSW government wants this to be the state's last lockdown.
"We intend for this lockdown to be the only lockdown we go through," she said.
"The lockdown is having its desired effect to date, no doubt about that.
"But it's still concerning that a number of cases are remaining infectious in the community for that period of time."
