Merrigong Theatre Company's artistic director Simon Hinton said he had seen the uncertainty drive many to stop pursuing work in the sector even with various rounds of government assistance.
"For people in the professional part of the sector it's a bit difficult to consider your livelihood which is so dependent on groups of people gathering," he said.
It comes as Gladys Berejiklian announced on Wednesday lockdown would be extended for Greater Sydney, Wollongong and Shellharbour at least until July 30.
Along with the latest round of disaster relief payments, performing arts organisations and live music venues will be able to apply for state government funding to keep the lights on and staff and performers in jobs with details to be revealed later in the month.
"We will get some offset against losses, but it's really unclear yet," Mr Hinton said.
"Our casual staff are able to access that COVID emergency payment, and we made a decision to pay all of our casual staff for [shifts lost from the first week of lockdown] until government assistance came through.
"We're looking at about $200,000 lost so far with what will be cancelled through July, and we expect [losses to continue] even when the lockdown finishes as it's tricky for our industry because you just can't just switch on straight away."
Funding will be available to NSW commercial and not-for-profit performing arts organisations, as well as live music venues impacted by the cancellation of shows. For information on how to apply, please visit www.create.nsw.gov.au.
