NSW Health has provided a statement to the Illawarra Mercury, saying that work remains a reasonable excuse to leave home under the public health order when it is not practicable to work from home.
Anyone who travels more than 50 kilometres outside the lockdown area for work must get tested for COVID-19 every seven days.
"Workers must have evidence of the test available for inspection on request by an employer, occupier of the premises, or the police," a NSW Health spokesperson said.
People from Wollongong, Shellharbour or the rest of Greater Sydney who work outside the lockdown area, but within 50 kilometres of it, are not required to undergo this regular testing.
Those who leave the lockdown area for work must abide by the stay-at-home rules while outside Greater Sydney.
However, residents of Fairfield, Canterbury Bankstown and Liverpool cannot leave their local government areas for work except those in certain jobs, including healthcare and emergency services.
Sunday saw 105 new cases of COVID-19 reported in NSW, and traces of the virus detected in sewage in Wollongong and Port Kembla.
