They soon chose Berry, and after an extensive search for a suitable parcel of land set about creating an ideal tree-change property.
'Raintree' is 43.68 acres of predominantly rainforest, with a creek and 6-metre high waterfall.
About three acres of it is cleared land.
"It's a pristine area," Mr Bowker said.
"It's got its own micro-climate and on parts of the land where we haven't built and we don't trek over, it's like it's never been touched.
"Down around the creek and waterfall, you'd think you were lost in time.
"It's magnificent, and no one's been near it. It's very special."
The three-bedroom (plus home office), two-bathroom home at 160 Red Cedar Lane, Berry is for sale with a price guide of $4.2 million.
The weatherboard home, completed 18 years ago, is designed as two pavilions connected by a glass-walled vestibule and courtyard with bronze fountain.
French doors open onto large wrap-around decks.
Originally designed as a family home, the rear pavilion of the property now operates as a popular bed and breakfast.
One pavilion contains the main living area with cathedral ceilings and a bluestone wood burning fireplace.
The second pavilion includes a living room with another fireplace, bar and air conditioned wine cellar, two bedrooms with built-in robes, a family bathroom and laundry.
Other features include a kitchen garden with raised beds and mature fruit trees, an enclosed chicken house, two fenced paddocks for keeping livestock and a 110,000-litre water tank.
Mr Bowker said their favourite features of the home included the bird life, location and "absolute serenity".
"We can't see or hear neighbours, and yet we're still only ten minutes from shops and facilities," he said.
Mr Bowker said they were selling in order to downsize, but planned to stay in the area.
He said the property could be well-suited to a buyer looking for their own tree-change.
"I think that in this day and age of being able to work from home, that even people employed in Sydney can work from home (while living) somewhere like this, and catch the train up once a week to go to the office," he said.
Selling agent, Tim McGoldrick from Elders Real Estate Berry said most prospective buyers for this property had been Sydney-based.
He said 'Raintree' was a special place that offered total privacy in a rainforest setting, with "amazing views from the local farm lands to Coolangatta Mountain, the Shoalhaven River and the coastline".
"The home has a soul, it's warm and inviting and very comfortable," he said.
"It's been well thought out with multiple living areas and great separation between spaces."
