About 2.40pm, a driver allegedly failed to stop for a random breath test in Captain Cook Drive, Barrack Heights and a pursuit ensued.
The chase was called off soon after, on Leawarra Avenue, due to safety concerns.
With the help of PolAir, the vehicle was found abandoned at Mount Warrigal.
Police arrested a 39-year-old man in Landy Drive, Mount Warrigal and took him to Lake Illawarra police station.
They expect to charge him with offences arising from the incident.
