Wollongong City Council has narrowed it down to three choices after seeking community feedback last December on suggestions for names of three new suburbs in the Dapto area presently known as suburbs A, C and E.
Council is now asking for the community's thoughts on what name would best represent suburb A. The new suburb will be created by portioning off sections of Kembla Grange, Huntley and Avondale.
Lord mayor Gordon Bradbery said the new suburbs are needed as more people build homes and move into the area. He said that will result in population density shifting from a rural landscape to urban living.
"Each of these names put forward for this new suburb have a connection to the West Dapto area and I encourage people to share their views on the preferred name,'' Cr Bradbery said.
"Murringah is the Dharawal word for coal, Stream Hill is an early land grant and the location of one of the oldest homesteads still standing in the area, and Haworth is a property owned by the Haworth family and part of the 1825 Dunlop Vale land grant.
"I'm interested to see what the community feedback is on these options. It's not often that we have the opportunity to come together as a community and name a suburb that will become the area where our newest communities will grow in.
''Choosing a name for a new suburbs is important as it's the building block of a community's identity. We want to get this right, and hearing from those who live in the area or who have a connection to it is an important step.''
The exhibition of the proposed suburb names is available through Council's website for six weeks.
Following closure of the exhibition on Friday September 10 the Councul will review all submissions and a further report will be made with recommendations for all three proposed suburbs A, C and E.
