They may not have claimed an historic Olympic medal in Tokyo, but the Aussies won over plenty of fans with their gutsy performances. Finishing fourth is no disgrace and gives them a platform to build on for the Women's World Cup on home soil in a couple of years time.
Coming up against the US showed the little lack of extra quality that the Aussies need. The Matildas rely heavily on Sam Kerr at the moment for her robust nature and style of play, and her strength in the air. I think we probably did see a little bit of a gap between the Matildas and the top teams in the world, but it's definitely not far off. I'm sure the aim over the next few years will be to close that gap and produce on home soil.
There's obviously a very strong squad there and the Aussies showed they can get results against some of the best teams. Some young players were introduced this campaign which is great for the future, but leading into the World Cup, I'd be hesitant to make too many changes because the base of the squad is there.
The new coach Tony Gustavsson will now have more time to stamp his authority on the team so, for me, there's definitely a lot to work with. I wouldn't be making wholesale changes.
