A Riverina man has been fined and had his licence suspended after he was caught by police allegedly travelling more than 50km/h above the speed limit while on his way to "get a pack of cigarettes".

Police said Narrandera highway patrol officers stopped a white Toyota Aurion on Beelbangera Road at Beelbangera about 8.20pm on Friday after the vehicle was clocked at 154km/h in a signposted 100km/h zone.
The driver was issued with an infringement notice for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h, fined $2547 and received six demerit points.
The man also had his driver's licence suspended for a period of six months.
