Bobby Billy Miceski, 20, appeared in Wollongong Local Court following an investigation into a deliberately lit car fire in Lake Illawarra earlier this year.
Documents tendered to court said Miceski had a falling out with a friend when he started dating his ex-girlfriend.
Police allege later that night two men drove to the man's house in a white hatchback before one poured accelerant, likely petrol, over his $15,000 car that is shared with a family member, before the men lit the car on fire then ran back to their vehicle and left.
The fire brigade had to be called and the car was completely destroyed.
A family member called the man to tell him about the car fire after he and his his girlfriend left to stay at her house as they allegedly feared for their safety following the phone call.
The incident was captured on security footage and police allege one of the men was Miceski.
Police allege Miceski's phone data places him close to the scene of the car fire at the relevant time.
Police also allege Miceski admitted to burning a car in a phone call and made further admissions.
Miceski is the subject of an apprehend violence order taken out by his ex-girlfriend and police allege he breached the order by calling her numerous times.
Miceski was arrested on Wednesday and allegedly lied to officers about where he was on the night of the car fire.
He was charged with intimidation, threatening to destroy or damage another person's property, damage property by fire and contravening a prohibition in an apprehended violence order.
Magistrate Claire Girotto refused to grant Miceski bail, despite his young age, limited criminal history and willingness to abide by a curfew, as the charges were serious, he was in bail at the time he allegedly committed the crime and the case against him appeared strong albeit being circumstantial.
