Windang resident and mountain bike enthusiast Paul Wortley took the footage as he wanted to give locals a sneak peek and remind them of good things to look forward to once lockdown ended.

"It looks pretty good," he said "To have something closer to my home that's at such a standard will be excellent. Often we might also travel to other places like Appin or ... Mount Annan - the few other places that are setup similar to what Cringila is. But I think Cringila is going to be much better."

The public trails were set to open this spring, but vandalism earlier in August has put the opening date in doubt after track work was damaged several times by either cycle or motorbike riders who got onto the site illegally.

"We appealed for people to contact NSW Police should they hear or see motorbikes using the tracks," ," a spokeswoman for Wollongong City Council said. "We continue to encourage people to report any motorbikes on the tracks to the NSW Police."

The spokeswoman said it was hoped the park would be open before summer, provided riders and walkers stayed away from the area until work was finished.

"Where there is still work being done to finish the tracks and their links, riding on them now can cause damage and runs the risk of delaying opening," she said.

"We appreciate to the untrained eye a track may appear finished when in fact there is still more work to be done."

She said over the coming weeks signage will be installed on the site to ensure riders move safely around it.

The track has been designed and is being built by construction company Dirt Art, who have been responsible for the design of more than 4,000km of trails, and construction of over 1,000km of trails across hundreds of projects throughout Australia and around the world, according to their website.

The recreation park is expected to encompass 11.5km of trails for beginner to intermediate riders and 3.1 km of walking trails.

The million-dollar Cringila Hills project is being jointly funded by Wollongong City Council and the NSW Government Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.
