The group says 40 per cent of residents have now received both doses of vaccine, which means the region is halfway to the target of 80 per cent.
"The momentum is building," a spokesperson said.
However, it's not building equally in all Local Government Areas.
Looking at the latest available statistics from the Department of Health, Kiama is now a clear leader with 44.3 per cent of eligible people living there fully vaccinated.
The Shoalhaven is next at just under 40 per cent of residents fully vaccinated.
Wollongong still has some work to do - it's at just over 36 per cent fully vaccinated.
Shellharbour is bottom of the pile, with 33.3 per cent of residents fully vaccinated - more than 10 per cent behind Kiama.
The #vaxtheillawarra team "strongly urged" Shellharbour residents to book in for a vaccination.
"The message to everyone, but especially to the people of Shellharbour, get yourself registered to get vaccinated and if you're nervous, check in with your GP," a spokesperson for the group said.
Shellharbour Mayor Marianne Saliba said she believed demographics and vaccine access played a role in the difference.
"The levels of each area don't surprise me," she said. "I would urge everyone to talk to their GP and then get appropriate treatment."
Australia's Governor-General, His Excellency David Hurley, and his wife, Her Excellency Mrs Linda Hurley, have added their support to the #vaxtheillawarra campaign.
The Governor General grew up in the Illawarra and joins other ambassadors like Australia's greatest Olympian Emma McKeon and UFC champion Alex Volkanovski in encouraging the region's residents to get vaccinated.
"The quickest way for all of us to be able to resume many of the things we enjoy doing is for everyone who is eligible to be fully vaccinated," the Governor-General said.
The #vaxtheillawarra campaign is striving to make the Illawarra Australia's first region to achieve the 80% target of eligible adults fully vaccinated. Information about local vaccination rates is publicly available on the NSW Health and Vax the Illawarra websites.
The Illawarra Mercury news app is now officially live on both iOS and Android devices. It is available for download in the Apple Store and Google Play.
