The decision was made this week with the return of community sport in NSW remaining unknown.
The men's and women's premier league is the pinnacle of touch footy in the Illawarra, playing under the banner of Illawarra and Group 7 rugby league clubs. 2021 was set to be the biggest season yet, with two additional teams coming on board.
"It's disappointing to miss out on this season. We had representative teams from Nowra and Appin set to join the premier league this year boosting the men's competition to eight teams, while our women's competition also attracted a record six teams," Wollongong Touch Association vice-president Tim Robinson said.
"We had a few options in place to run the season if it was delayed from its original start date of September 13. However, with the outlook bleak for a return of community sport before November, it made for the tough decision to abandoned the competition for 2021."
The decision comes off the back of NSW Touch's decision to cancel the 2021 Vawdon Cup and Country Championships, which the Wollongong Devils representative teams annually feature heavily in.
At this stage, the NSW State Cup is still scheduled for early December.
While local competitions remain grounded, registrations are now open for the Wollongong Touch summer social and junior competitions. Despite a delayed start, the club will look to run both competitions as soon as restrictions ease.
