The Shellharbour talent competed in his pet event at the Tokyo Olympics, finishing seventh in his heat.
Having learnt plenty of lessons from that race, Edwards is confident gaining experience at a variety of distances will benefit his performances in the 1500m.
"I don't think I quite got it right with all my races this year," Edwards said. "There were a few too many 1500m, I need to mix it up a bit more.
"I want to do a couple of 800s, one or two 5km, a 3km. I need to be able to run those to get more aerobically fit. It's been hard because I've been so injury prone, but that's something I can hopefully work on the rest of this year."
Edwards enjoyed a break after returning to Australia from Japan, however he is now back training.
The 23-year-old is steadily building up his volume ahead of a busy summer that will likely start with the NSW 3000m Championships.
With both the Commonwealth Games and World Championships taking place next year, Edwards knows he must manage his training to remain injury free throughout the coming months.
"I've built up my body and my resilience this year. The past few years, I haven't quite got my training right, but I've learnt now what works for me and what doesn't.
"I'd like to do the NSW 3km Championships and Albie Thomas Mile, but it's also a long game. I don't have to be at my peak until April for Nationals, and then the middle of next year for World Championships and Commonwealth Games."
