Over the warmer months, Wollongong City Council is conducting a trial where it allows food trucks to operate on public land owned or maintained by council.
At present trucks are specifically prohibited from using council car parks and sporting fields or serving food along the foreshore.
"The vans and trucks you see around town are either at specific events (Council or private), or they may be trading on private land such as in car parks, petrol stations etc," a council spokesperson said.
"There are a few vans that currently trade on public land such as Flagstaff Hill in Wollongong.
"These have been approved via an open formal quotation process. They have a licence agreement and pay a licence fee for this use."
Food truck owners will need to register to take part in the trial.
"The number of vendors approved will be limited, and this will be done through an open application process called a formal quotation," the spokesperson said.
Participation in the trial gives them access to 15 sites across the city.
These include car parks at Stanwell Park beach and Thomas Dalton Park at Fairy Meadow as well as Kanahooka Park and Windang boat ramp.
"As part of the trial, only a certain number of food trucks and vans will be permitted to trade in specific locations and at different times," the council spokesperson said.
"The trial also guides the hours that food trucks and vans can operate in each location. The best way to know when and where a food truck may be is to follow them on social media."
As part of the trial, council will be looking to get feedback from the community about the food truck trial.
Feedback can be given via the council's Our Wollongong website once the trial commences.
