Police have charged Alan Taylor, aged 54, with robbery with an offensive weapon.
Police allege at 12.40am Saturday morning Taylor approached a 51-year-old man who was sleeping on a park bench at the corner of Crown and Keira Streets, Wollongong.
Taylor allegedly attempted to steal personal belongings, before producing a large knife and making threats.

Police say Taylor stole a backpack and fled the scene on foot.
A short time later, officers from Wollongong Police District were notified and commenced inquiries.
Taylor was arrested at Crown Street and taken to Wollongong Police Station, where he was subsequently charged with robbery armed with offensive weapon.
He did not apply for bail at Wollongong Court on Saturday morning, and it was formally refused.
Taylor was already on bail for another offence when he was arrested.
The 51-year-old man was not injured during the incident.
