The woman and a friend had been walking along a track near the Sea Cliff Bridge around 9.30am when she slipped and fell, hitting her head and also fracturing her arm.
NSW Ambulance Duty Operations Manager Illawarra Norm Rees said because of the difficulty in being able to assess the patient they called for a rescue helicopter to lower in a paramedic, as well as sending a team in by foot.
Inspector Rees said they had hoped paramedics would be able to walk the patient out via the beach but the incoming tide blocked the exit, and the woman had to be winched out.
The woman was then able to be transported to hospital for treatment.
