Emergency services responded to reports of a crash involving up to 10 vehicles (including trucks) in the northbound lanes of the Hume Motorway, just south of Picton Road, shortly after 3pm.
The driver of a Mitsubishi Fuso - 43-year-old man - was trapped inside his vehicle.
He was released by Fire and Rescue NSW and treated by paramedics, however died at the scene. It's understood he was not a resident of the Illawarra.
Officers from Camden Police Area Command established a crime scene.
Five drivers from other vehicles involved in the crash were taken to Campbelltown Hospital for mandatory testing.
A heavy thunderstorm hit the area at a similar time, though it is uncertain whether that was the cause of the crash.
"The circumstances surrounding the crash are being investigated by the Crash Investigation Unit, which is ongoing and will take into consideration all relevant factors at the time of the incident," a NSW Police spokesperson said.
The incident closed all northbound lanes and one southbound lane for some time - some drivers reported waiting in their cars for three hours.
A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
