NSW Fire and Rescue were called to the three-storey Bourke St motel at 10.46pm Sunday, finding smoke billowing from a room on the first floor.
A spokeswoman for NSW Police said officers from Wollongong Police District tried to speak to a man who barricaded himself him inside a room that he had allegedly set on fire.
Police officers, aided by firefighters, forced entry to the room. Police used a Taser on him before he was arrested.
Four Wollongong officers were taken to Wollongong Hospital for treatment, according to NSW Police.
Six people self-evacuated the motel. Firefighters had the blaze under control by 11.10pm.
Fire investigators are at the site today.
The Mercury understands there was fairly minor heat and smoke damage to the room.
