At Monday night's Wollongong City Council meeting, councillors voted to name the under-construction promenade and terraces at North Wollongong Beach in honour of McKeon and her record-breaking seven-medal haul at the Tokyo Olympics.
"This is a fitting tribute to one of our city's home-grown heroes who has achieved extraordinary levels of success in her sport and career, and yet is so humble about her accomplishments and the dedication it requires to compete at this elite level,'' Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery said.
The terraces proposal was one of two options before councillors at Monday night's meeting - the other was to name the Cliff Road viewing platform overlooking the harbour and continental pools.
"This decision has been made in consultation with Emma and the McKeon family and I look forward to welcoming her in Wollongong and walking the promenade and terraces with her, once they're completed," Cr Bradbery said.
There was a call for ideas from the public earlier this year, with a number of suggestions coming back that it was fitting that a pool should carry her name.
However, the family - who runs a swim school at Unanderra - were concerned that could pose a commercial conflict of interest.
Re-naming the Western Suburbs Pool where the swim school is based under licence was also not a suitable option due to the possibility of some other operator taking over in the future and operating under McKeon name.
Other ideas put forward included naming Allans Creek after her or having council built a splash park facility.
Work started on the promenade and terraces in May this year, jointly funded by council and the NSW government.
The $10 million project also includes an upgrade to the North Wollongong Surf Club.
The terraces will double as a sea wall to protect the club and other coastal facilities from storm damage.
