And they have a taste for it now, after an impressive 3-1 win over Brazil in Sydney on Saturday.
The victory offers them a chance to move on from the disappointment of missing out on a medal at the Tokyo Olympics, as well as the scrutiny over their culture.
It may have been a friendly, but it was a huge moment for the Matildas and Australian football, to beat one of the powerhouse nations like Brazil.
They produced impressive football, with second-half goals from Mary Fowler and Emily Van Egmond sealing a dominant win, after Claire Polkinghorn opened the scoring.
The second game will be played on Tuesday night at Parramatta's CommBank Stadium.

The Matildas have been knocking on the door of major tournament success for some time, but they're benefitting from the ultra-professional era of playing in top leagues like the English Women's Super League, where Illawarra's own Caitlin Foord plays for Arsenal.
Hopefully this is the start of something special.
Back in action
What a perfect way for the Wolves to return to the pitch on Saturday night, taking on my old club and A-League giants Sydney FC.
It's been a long wait for everyone in the squad, who have been training to stay fit and ready during the lockdown.
Now it's a great opportunity to test themselves against some of the best players in the country, as the Wolves head towards an FFA Cup round of 32 game against NSW National Premier League rivals Mt Druitt on November 6.
It's fantastic for Wollongong to have two games to target and hopefully it can also help them progress further in the Cup.
FRIENDLY (Saturday): WOLLONGONG WOLVES v SYDNEY FC at Albert Butler Memorial Park (3pm, tickets via Eventbrite)
FFA CUP (Saturday, November 6): MT DRUITT v WOLLONGONG WOLVES at Popondetta Park (7pm).
