The defending champions remain at the foot of the WBBL ladder after the opening fortnight of competition, with Albion Park's Tahlia Wilson and her teammates desperately searching for a swift form reversal.
The Sydneysiders came within 12 runs of knocking off the Renegades' cross-town rivals at Launceston's University of Tasmania Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. The Stars batted first and compiled a total of 7/108, with Ellyse Villani top-scoring with a half-century while Issy Wong took 2/19.
In reply, the Thunder were in early trouble at 4/12, including Wilson being dismissed for a duck. Indian all-rounder Deepti Sharma led the fightback with an unbeaten 44, but the Thunder were restricted to 5/96 after 20 overs. Stars bowler Kim Garth was named player of the match after taking 3/11.
The result means that the Thunder remain winless after their opening three games. After Tuesday's loss, coach Trevor Griffin admitted he was frustrated.
"We are a young unit, but most of these girls have been around the WBBL for a number of years in some format, and they've all played in the WNCL (Women's National Cricket League). They've all got the skills to be able to perform at this level," he said.
"We wanted a response with the ball, and we got that which was great to see. But we're going to need someone in our top four or top six to put on a score for us. I guess the benefits of these back-to-back games is we get to pick ourselves up and go again on Wednesday."
